Medical assistants are often trained through programs at medical assistant schools. Work in reception, answer telephone, schedule appointments, process medical billing, keep financial records, file medical charts, telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy, transcribe dictation, send letters and triage patients over the telephone using a protocol to determine the acuity of the visit and the visit-length for scheduling purposes.

While there are many certifications that medical assistants can acquire, the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is the only medical assistant certification program that requires applicants to demonstrate CPR ability, graduate from an accredited program and continue practice for recertification eligibility.

Students are considered employed if the University has established that the student is employed at least part-time in a position where job function are in the field of training or related to the skills and knowledge acquired through successful completion of the training program for 15 business days.

A. Skills covered in the Medical Assistant Associate Degree Program include fundamentals like psychology, pharmacology, medical coding, reiumbursement methodologies, law, ethics, and confedentiality, medical terminology, medical surgical procedures, clinical procedure theory, and other Allied Health basics.

Though not required, the program encourages students to complete a job-shadowing experience in a medical office during their last semester. The 15 credits of general education are Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) courses for students who wish to continue advanced healthcare education.
